I recently started a book called Confessions of an Economic Hit Man by John Perkins where Mr. Perkins describes his recruitment, career, and redemption from his life as an Economic Hit Man. An Economic Hit man is essentially an economist who goes into a developing country and writes reports about how foreign investment into public utilities will affect positive economic growth. Once the country has accepted the foreign investment, the Hit Man's firm and other American engineering contractors are awarded lucrative contracts to complete the project. The more nefarious side of the Hit Man's role is to run up a bill that the country can not pay thus finding themselves in a compromised position and at the mercy of their creditors.
The cloak and dagger theme is further enhanced when you find that the Hit Man is a corporate front for the United States and it's alleged international political agenda of imperialism.
I'm still working my way through the book, and believe what you may of the corporate agenda/conspiracies, I'm finding it a compelling read and a starting point for researching the world economy.
